To Earn Eternity

How good will i have to be

next year when i’m ninety-three?

No better than i am today;

the past will just be yesterday.

How long can the future last

when the years go by so fast?

With no beginning or end

the future blows in the wind.

I have been as good as i can

and i have been a happy man.

I will try to be better

tomorrow and forever.

Perhaps i will live that long

if i just do nothing wrong.
