Phainopepla in the Sky

Why do blackbirds seem to be

so full of hilarity?

They are not mysterious

and never are too serious.

There are a number of kinds

with only fun on their minds.

They steal other bird’s nests

and often they can be pests.

By now everyone knows

i love ravens, grackles, and crows.

Perhaps because they are like me

full of nonsense and free.

Freedom and democracy

are for the blackbirds and me.
