I Remember Fodder

We hauled the fodder from the field,

the last of the corn crop’s yield.

We pulled corn leaves from the stalk

midst dust and sweat and little talk.

It was exhausting i recall,

this last summer chore before fall.

Giving cattle something to chew

when they had nothing else to do.

The corm of the stalk was then plowed.

where nurturing soil was allowed.

There was always something to do

in summer, fall, and winter too.

I also remember the spring

when i was young and still farming.
