The Choice
“I suppose i have already made the choice”
Joe said. “Between the intelligence i
believe is God, my country, my people
who have been conquered, and the
occupiers who believe they have liberated
us from an evil and exploitive capitalist
system.”
“And so your choice requires that
you kill a man who has discovered our
secret underground?” the captain asked.
“That is precisely my predicament.
There is a conflict between my deepest
and insistent beliefs. My God says i must
love my enemy.”
The captain said, “You force this
onerous choice onto me; to kill both you
and the enemy.” Then he kneeled and said,
“God, Why must you be indifferent?”
The prisoner then spoke up, “If i
had the choice there would be no killing.
My God says we should both love and
kill our enemies. I may make it easier for
you by suggesting that my God is better
than yours in His indifference.”
