True Imagination

In our stories of our lives

the real truth sometimes survives.

But, if the truth has no meaning

i enhance it with some preening.

After all, what might have been

is possibly not a sin.

It is elaboration

done without hesitation.

When asked, “Was that really true?”

I say, “It will have to do.

My memory has faded,

the truth was not evaded.

When i tell what might have been,

it makes a better story then.
