Hymns To an Incredible God

How can i be touched by a song

whose lyrics always seem so wrong?

What are the lyrics anyway

with the music so hard to play?

I keep hearing the hymns too much

about heaven and hell and such

to be as much uplifted as

i am when hearing wordless jazz.

But what i’m humming Sunday night

with some reminiscent delight

are tunes with incredible words

as if memorized by the birds.

Do you get a tune in your head

you still hear when you crawl in bed?
