Explicating Their Songs

As the day moved into the night

the birds were moving out of sight;

hiding, but we knew they were there

we could hear their good night prayer.

They were grateful–the same as me

for some unnamed divinity.

I didn’t know what they were saying

but their songs sounded like praying.

Mockingbirds seemed to indicate

that they were searching for a mate.

Midnight, they had a mournful sound

because no companion was found.

But they greet the coming day.

Mourning forgotten–time to play.
