Fortune’s wan smile becomes a leer,
at least it looks that way from here.
You can’t depend on lady luck
to arrive in a golden truck.
It takes a donkey and a plow
to make a hard living somehow.
You have to work and plan ahead
and remember what Barnum said:
“A sucker born ev’ry minute”
and he included us in it.
Something for nothing may sound great
if you have hope, don’t hesitate.
