Beyond Horizons
The harbor lights reach out to sea
but far horizons call to me.
What waits at the edge of the world
where some foreign flags are unfurled?
As a boy i had thought “I can
see the world when i am a man.”
I grew up and joined the navy;
no more plowing with mule for me.
Seven years included a war,
i was ready to go ashore.
He was a cantankerous fool
but i was happy to see that mule.
And, i’m unable to forget
the lure of far horizons yet.
