The Death of Indignity
Indignities endured as a child
were very easily reconciled.
We realized that when we were grown
we would have dignities of our own.
Now that we have reached adulthood
indignities aren’t understood.
Streams of consciousness, at any age,
can make us feel like we’re on a stage.
We sometimes wonder who we are
but we don’t wander very far.
We stay close to the identity
which we acquired in our infancy.
Maturity is still ahead
and eludes us until we’re dead.
