Being Proud Is Not Allowed
A yearning to be recognized
by some current popular poet
does not tear at my heartstrings.
I had rather be understood
as having intentions which are good
by contemporaries who know me.
I am not a master of my art.
I am a rhymester and not a poet.
Friends say, “Don’t let anyone know it.”
I am drowning in inaptitude
but i do have a good attitude.
I’d rather some idiot grinned
and said, “Walt Abbott is my friend.”
